Why is nickel plating essential for brass?
The first challenge is dezincification. In certain environments—particularly those involving hot or slightly acidic water—the zinc in brass can dissolve. This phenomenon gradually degrades the alloy’s mechanical properties. Nickel plating acts as an effective barrier between the brass and its environment, thereby reducing the risk of dezincification and extending the service life of the parts.
The second point to watch for concerns the hydrogen generated during electrolytic nickel plating. On certain brass parts with high internal stresses or significant work hardening, hydrogen absorption can, in specific cases, affect mechanical behavior. When warranted by the application, a dehydrogenation heat treatment is performed after plating to remove the absorbed hydrogen and ensure the part’s performance.

Does nickel-plated brass rust?
